BEST TIPS on how to keep the kids busy during summer

There are many ways to keep children busy during the summer. However, things are slightly different from when the pandemic started. Everyone has acclimated to how we do things now. What do I mean by that?

Well, let’s look at indoor play areas or alternatively known as soft play areas. I don’t know about other countries, but here in the UAE, those were closed temporarily. Public playgrounds, swimming pools, and schools were included in the closure as were most things where crowds would gather, due to this awful situation. Since then, schools are closed for the summer holidays. Luckily playgrounds and swimming pools have re-opened with guidelines to stay safe.

I don’t know about you, but even after several weeks of them being open, I still haven’t taken my children swimming or play on a playground. Honestly, I do not trust others to be as diligent as we are. My children probably know more about washing hands and not touching anything more than most adults. (no insult intended)

Before I continue with my tips, I have to put things into perspective first. Although Dubai is a fantastic place to live in, the UAE summers are not like most places. Temperatures reach a maximum of 50oC, which is bearable. However, it is the humidity that kicks your butt. As soon as you have the combination of 45oC and +50% humidity, you are in for a wet, hot, and uncomfortable experience.

Lets get to the tips then, shall we:

The great outdoors
This is probably the most cost-effective way to keep the children occupied if you want to get up and out of the house at 6 am. I don’t! However, I do make the effort to watch the weather and venture outdoors in this heat late afternoon. Just be sure to stay hydrated! We use the lovely Thermos Funtainer Stainless Steel bottles, as they work well in the heat. It keeps the water cold and no nasties like plastic.

Inflatable Pool
Both of my children are “water babies” and will turn into jellyfish if I don’t limit their water playtime. That said, it is a great way to get them natural Vitamin D, physical activity which works up a great appetite.

Painting
An amazing way to keep them entertained indoors and explore their creativity. My children both are under 4 and things can get very messy when it comes to painting. However, I found the perfect Dot Painting Kit with very little mess.

Yoga for Kids
Several YouTube channels offer a variety of children’s entertainment. My daughter just loves Yoga for Kids. Great indoor activity and teaches them patience along with building muscle. Namaste.

Colored Rice
This is a great option for the children to assist you in making the colored rice and play with it once it’s ready. A fantastic way to work on their fine motor skills, sensory play, identifying colors, and counting. Click here for the recipe.

I hope my top tips help you as well as they are helping me. Remember the children are just as frustrated as we are and we all need an “out” from all this craziness.
